<image:title>About - NICHOLAS L. YAP, D.C.</image:title>
<image:caption>Doctor of Chiropractic, Bachelors in Kinesiology and Human Biology, Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach Born and raised in Malaysia, Dr. Yap immigrated to the USA where he obtained his Bachelor of Kinesiology from Washington State University (GO COUGS!) while serving on the Division 1 Varsity Strength & conditioning team. He went on to pursue his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and Bachelor of Human Biology from the University of Western States in Portland Oregon. Dr. Yap is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and has enjoyed working with a wide variety of Division 1 athletes during his time in Washington which includes women’s rowing, women’s soccer, all track & field events, men’s golf, basketball, and baseball. His experience working in several multidisciplinary practices throughout Washington and Oregon has enabled Dr. Yap to work collaboratively with other health care professionals including primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, physical therapists, and registered massage therapists to provide his patients with the most thorough and comprehensive care. A former athlete himself, Dr. Yap enjoys strength training both indoor & outdoor and exploring new places to hike as often as he can here in beautiful Victoria, BC. He believes that leading an active lifestyle is integral to a healthy life. When he is not challenging himself physically, Dr. Yap spends his free time in the kitchen exploring new recipes and spending time with his wife.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Spinal Manipulation</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Yap utilizes a series of effective chiropractic spinal manipulation (AKA spinal adjustments) through the Diversified Technique. Spinal manipulation has been shown in numerous scientific studies to help improve function, increase range of motion, and decrease pain for spine-related conditions in the neck, upper to mid-back, lower back, pelvis and sacrum.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61dca1987d1ad428f0c55041/adaef4e1-718f-4a4b-a11f-471cf3e4788c/Ankle+LAD.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Services - Extremity Manipulation</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes, you read that right! We, as Chiropractic Physicians also treat joints in the extremities. Extremity manipulation is often very helpful in post-traumatic incidents involving the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and wrist. Dr. Yap has found that extremity manipulation is especially helpful in hip pain and ankle pain conditions where our range of motion may be restricted. In the clinic, we’ve found that imbalanced muscular activity surrounding these joints can result in decentration of the joints. This can lead to increased pain and limited mobility with activities. Dr. Yap always combines extremity manipulation with rehab exercises to aid in restoring the proper functional movement and better centration or position of the joint surfaces. Ultimately allowing you to optimize your muscle synergies to perform at your best.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM)</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Yap utilizes a variety of tools in the clinic in combination with hands-on manual therapy. These instruments allow for precise evaluation of the potential trouble areas and provide therapeutic treatment of muscle & tendon dysfunction, and fascial adhesions or restrictions for common overuse injuries or post-surgical therapy. He has found that these therapeutic interventions are effective for the management of extremity complaints involving the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle to name a few.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT)</image:title>
<image:caption>Also referred to as the Mckenzie Method, MDT was developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie and is one of the most researched rehabilitation methods for the treatment of joint pain in the neck, lower back, and extremities relating to intervertebral disc pain. In the clinic, Dr. Yap sees a lot of discogenic related pain cases such as severe or chronic lower back pain, sciatica, numbness or tingling down the leg or arm, and acute low back pain. He can help you determine your movement preference which will aid in alleviating your pain, prevent it from returning, and lead to proper function.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS)</image:title>
<image:caption>Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) was developed by Pavel Kolar, PhD, PT from the Czech Republic and operates out of the Prague School of Rehabilitation and Manual Medicine. The DNS rehabilitation principles are deeply rooted in the exploration of neurodevelopmental postures and movements shared by everyone from the developmental milestones in their first years of life. DNS therapeutic approach aims to activate the “Integrated Stabilizing System” of the spine and locomotion. In other words, DNS exercises are prescribed by our trained clinicians to help restore the body’s natural movement patterns, alleviate the transfer of forces to all joints, and promote optimal spinal positions for all activities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Services - Neurodynamic Solutions (NDS)</image:title>
<image:caption>Neurodynamic Solutions (NDS) & Clinical Neurodynamics was developed by Physiotherapist and Researcher, Michael Shacklock, PhD., PT. This effective manual technique considers and evaluates the mechanical movement of nerves in our bodies and the interactions with the surrounding tissues. Dr. Yap utilizes this system to successfully diagnose and treat nerve impingement cases and nerve pain that can be stemming from the neck and or lower back. This diagnostic and therapeutic system of approach is not common amongst chiropractors and physiotherapists, but our clinicians are well equipped to handle your nerve pain!</image:caption>

If you’re a CrossFit athlete, powerlifter, Olympic weightlifter, distance runner, or simply want to maximize your workouts in the gym without pain or discomfort, we can help! Our goal is to not only address your pains and aches, but we focus heavily on teaching you how to move better, feel better, and be stronger. <image:title>Services - Dynamic Cupping Therapy & Kinesiotaping</image:title>
<image:caption>Adopted from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) application of glass cupping, Dr. Yap utilizes dynamic cupping in the form of silicone soft cups and a neutral skin lubricant to help reduce the likelihood of bruising, lift the fascia to allow for the muscles and nerves to glide and slide freely, and is very effective in reducing superficial nerve irritation and trigger points! He can also implement the use of Kinesiotaping for sports-related cases as well as pain reduction via proprioceptive feedback from the body. This new therapeutic application is frequently utilized as a treatment for myofascial trigger points in neck pain, shoulder tightness, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, and ankle sprains.</image:caption>

<image:title>BACK PAIN - About Back Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>Millions of Canadians suffer from back pain or lower back pain every year and they respond well to Chiropractic Care. Conservative Chiropractic care should be your first course of treatment to manage your back pain. Common causes of back pain include lumbar joint irritation, sprain and strains, lumbar disc disorders, and lumbar stenosis. Once Dr. Yap determines the diagnosis of your back pain or lower back pain, he will build a treatment plan that targets the direct and indirect causes of your lower back pain. Our Victoria Chiropractic office sees a large variety of people, working in many different industries, at different stages of physical activity, and at all stages of life. For this reason, Dr. Yap will never take a one-size-fits-all approach to your treatment. YOU DESERVE BETTER!</image:caption>

<image:title>SHOULDER PAIN - Shoulder Pain & Shoulder Impingement</image:title>
<image:caption>Chiropractic care can be extremely beneficial for problems involving the shoulder. In our experience, shoulder pain is most commonly due to the rotator cuff muscles or the shoulder joint (glenohumeral joint) itself. A proper examination and evaluation of the shoulder joint, neck and its global movements will help Dr. Yap determine the root cause of your shoulder pain. Dr. Yap believes that shoulder impingement is one of the most common shoulder complaints and that it is NOT a primary diagnosis but rather a result of an underlying disorder. Depending on the diagnosis, Dr. Yap will work together with our patients to build a safe and concise treatment plan that targets both the direct and indirect causes, leading to shoulder pain relief and preventing it from coming back.</image:caption>

<image:title>ELBOW & WRIST PAIN - Elbow & Wrist Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>Elbow and Wrist complaints are typically a result of repetitive and overuse movements such as tennis, knitting, playing musical instruments, skilled-trade workers, and golf. Without proper treatment or rest, these complaints can persist for over a year from the first onset of pain. We have recently seen a rise of elbow and wrist complaints from excessive use of the computer, keyboard, and mouse; with the new shift to desk workers operating from their homes instead of the office. If you are struggling with a persistent elbow or wrist pain and it is preventing you from enjoying activities outside of work, Dr. Yap CAN HELP!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another common condition Dr. Yap sees and treats in our Victoria Chiropractic Clinic is pain in the hip joint. Hip pain can be caused by a number of factors and underlying conditions such as arthritis, degeneration, or referred pain from the lumbar spine. That is why it is important and necessary to appropriately diagnose and design a treatment plan accordingly. Some direct causes of hip pain can include arthritis of the hip joint, hip bursitis, hip impingement from overuse or hip pointers from a traumatic episode. Pain in the hip can also be coming from indirect sources such as lumbar instability, hip instability, muscular imbalances, lumbar disc herniation with referred pain to the hip, and peripheral nerve impingement.</image:caption>

<image:title>Knee Pain - Knee Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>Chiropractic care can be extremely beneficial for problems involving the knee joint. In our experience, knee pain is commonly due to factors outside of the knee joint like the hip and ankle. Research suggests that thorough clinical examination is generally very good at ruling out various knee pathologies, including internal derangement conditions. Dr. Yap believes that the cause of knee pain can fall into a very broad category of conditions in the absence of trauma to the structures of the knee itself. The location of your knee pain can be very helpful in making an accurate diagnosis. Depending on the diagnosis, he will work together with our patients to build a safe and concise treatment plan that targets both the direct and indirect causes, leading to knee pain relief and to prevent it from coming back.</image:caption>

<image:title>Disc Injuries - Disc Injury, Disc Herniation, & Discogenic Low Back Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>Another common condition Dr. Yap sees and treats often in our Victoria Chiropractic Clinic is lower back pain that is caused by the intervertebral discs. According to current research and statistical data, a large majority nearing 80% of severe lower back pain is due to an intervertebral disc lesion. A common complaint is lower back pain and sciatica. In some cases, the lower back pain can progress into radiating pain to the buttock region and down the thigh to the toes. It can present initially as sharp stabbing pain, a jolt of electricity down the leg, lower back stiffness in the morning and at night, numbness or tingling or weakness. These conditions are treatable without the need for surgery. In some severe cases, a surgical consult may be warranted.</image:caption>

<image:title>Foot & Ankle Pain - Foot & Ankle Pain</image:title>
<image:caption>We all have experienced foot or ankle pain at some point in our lives. The bones in our feet and ankles are small but mighty! They can withstand a lot of force when we walk, run, and jump. So, it is important that these joints function optimally to allow you to run, jog, jump, etc without too much trouble. Chiropractic manipulation is shown to be effective at alleviating foot and ankle pain, restoring proper joint range of motion, and improving stability via a combination of specific rehab exercises. Some common causes of foot pain include: Peripheral nerve impingement Ankle sprains (Inversion or eversion ankle sprain, high ankle sprain) Morton’s neuroma Hammer toes, Mallet toes, claw toes Bunions Plantar Fasciitis Stress fractures Collapsed arch and improper orthotic fitting/evaluation</image:caption>
